Widows 7 tips- Add a Videos link to the Start Menu

The Windows 7 Start Menu includes links to your Pictures and Music folders, but not to your Videos folder. If you watch a lot of videos and want a link to them on your Start Menu, here's what you can do:

1. Right-click the Start button and select Properties.

2. On the screen that appears, go to the Start Menu tab and click Customize.

3. In the dialog box that appears, scroll to the bottom, look for the Videos section, select "Display as a link," and click OK and then OK again.

If you'd prefer that Videos display as a menu, with links to files and submenus, instead select "Display as a menu."

Windows 7 tweak Modify UAC

The User Account Control security feature was one of the most reviled additions to Windows Vista, with good reason -- its constant warning messages asking for permission to continue many operations drove users around the bend.

UAC has been significantly improved in Windows 7 so that it's not as intrusive as in Vista, but you can still tweak it if you like.

Here's how to turn UAC on or off, and make it less or more intrusive than the default:

1. Go to the Control Panel --> User Accounts and Family Safety.

2. Click User Accounts, then click Change User Account Control settings.

3. From the screen that appears, use the slider to select the level of protection you want. Here are the four levels and what they mean:

Always notify me. Think of this as UAC Classic. It works like Vista's UAC: When you make changes to your system, when software is installed or when a program tries to make a change to your system, an annoying prompt appears.

Default -- Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer. This is, obviously, the default; make a change yourself and UAC leaves you alone. When a program makes a change, a prompt appears and your desktop goes dark, just like it does in Vista. Otherwise, UAC sits there silently.

Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop). This setting is identical to the default setting, with one difference: It won't dim your desktop so that you only see the UAC prompt asking you to take action. This presents a slightly elevated security risk over the default setting, because theoretically a program could allow a malicious program to interfere with the UAC prompt.

Never notify me when: In this one, UAC is completely turned off. This is, of course, an insecure option and not recommended for most users.

After you make the selection, click OK. You may need to restart your system.

Windows 7 tweak to Use hidden international wallpapers and themes

There are background scenery and themes from other English-speaking countries -- Australia, Canada, Great Britain and South Africa. Normally, you can't access those backgrounds or themes, but there is a simple way you can install and use them:(other than installed country)

1. In the search box in the Start menu, type C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT and press Enter. (Note: If Windows 7 is installed in a drive other than C:, use that letter instead.)

2. Windows Explorer will launch and show you a list of subfolders under C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT: MCT-AU, MCT-CA, MCT-GB, MCT-US, and MCT-ZA. Each subfolder has wallpapers for a specific country: AU for Australia, CA for Canada, GB for Great Britain, US for the United States, and ZA for South Africa.

For any of the countries whose wallpaper and themes you want to use, go into its Theme folder, for example, C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT\MCT-ZA\Theme. Double-click the theme you see there (for example ZA).

3. That will install a shortcut to the theme and wallpapers in the Personalization section of Control Panel.

You can now use them as you would any other theme or background, by right-clicking the desktop, choosing Personalize, and choosing a background or theme

Obama pays tribute to Mumbai terror victims

He said the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, where he and his wife are staying as guests, was a symbol of India's "strength and resilience".

Mr Obama is on the first leg of a 10-day Asian tour designed to boost US exports and create jobs.

He is also due to visit Indonesia, South Korea and Japan.

"We will never forget," Mr Obama said at a memorial to the victims of the attack by Islamic militants.

The outdoor memorial is a fountain with floating flowers just off the lobby of the hotel.

He also wrote in a memorial book: "The United States stands in solidarity with all of Mumbai and all of India in working to eradicate the scourge of terrorism."

More than 170 people died in a series of co-ordinated attacks across the city in November 2008.

Mr Obama said he intended to send a signal by making Mumbai his first stop and by staying at the Taj hotel.

Later, the Obamas visited a museum in a former home of Mahatma Gandhi, seen as the father of Indian independence and revered as a global spiritual leader.

Mr Obama wrote in the guest book that Gandhi "is a hero not just to India, but to the world".

Big contracts

He is due to meet local business leaders and US executives. US officials say they expect major contracts to be announced.

The president's tour follows US mid-term elections which saw heavy losses for Democrats, seen in part as punishment for the US administration's inability to tackle high unemployment.

Mr Obama's plane, Air Force One, touched down in Mumbai at about midday (0700 GMT) after a 15-hour flight from Washington.

After being greeted by officials, he and his wife, Michelle, were then taken by helicopter to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel.

Warship patrol

Security is tight for Mr Obama's visit.

Thousands of Indian and US security personnel are deployed and a US naval warship is on patrol in the waters off the coast of the city.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder, in Mumbai, says that while residents are celebrating Diwali - the festival of light - celebrations in the city are muted because of the huge security operation.

But while the president will pay his respects to victims, he will also be seeking to drum up business for the United States, our correspondent says.

Before the trip, Mr Obama spoke of the need for greater US access to India markets as part of a drive to double US exports over the next five years and help revive the economy at home.

Trade between India and the US was worth about $40bn in 2008 - still significantly less than US trade with other partners like China and Europe.

'Range of issues'

India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has said Mr Obama's visit will expand strategic ties between the two countries leading to a more "productive" partnership.

"We are not at a stage in our relationship perhaps for another big bang but certainly there will be positive outcomes," Ms Rao said on Wednesday.

"We will see concrete and significant steps in wide range of areas that will expand the long-term strategic framework in a way that we can create productive partnership for the mutual benefit and [will be] equally important to give substantive content and shape to the global strategic partnership," she said.

White House officials say the administration plans 17 or 18 announcements during the trip on a range of economic, security and political issues.

Later on his trip, Mr Obama will announce a "comprehensive partnership" including economic ties in Indonesia, attend a G20 summit of global economic powers in Seoul and participate in an Asia-Pacific economic forum in Yokohama, Japan.

Mumbai Indians V/S Delhi dare devils IPL match pre review

Mumbai have lost each time they have chased this season, squandering winning positions to slip down to seventh place, just above the struggling Kolkata Knight Riders. Their capitulation under pressure, and failure to finish off games hurt them badly last season, and the trend this year is no different. Equally worrying has been their excessive reliance on JP Duminy to hole them out of difficult situations. His three 40-plus scores, including two half-centuries, in Mumbai's three defeats while chasing demonstrate the huge responsibility he's had to bear amid little support from his team-mates. Mumbai need a win desperately, and though a positive result may not haul them into the top four, it will mark a step towards a much-needed turnaround in a crucial phase in the tournament. Delhi won't worry too much about points, for as much as they would want to regain the No.1 spot, their place in the top four, for the moment, remains safe. They have been boosted by the consistency of AB de Villiers, and especially Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Mumbai's new inclusions Dhawal Kulkarni and Rohan Raje had a good outing against Deccan, but Harbhajan Singh has gone wicketless in his last three games. Sachin Tendulkar was averaging 81 after Mumbai's first three games, but since then he's only managed 48 runs in his last four innings.

The fast-bowling trio of Dirk Nannes, Ashish Nehra and Pradeep Sangwan have been fairly consistent, though Nannes had an off day against Kolkata. The three have taken 24 wickets at 24.9, with Nehra being the leading wicket-taker. Gambhir, desperate for runs, top-scored against Kolkata with a lucky 71 - he was dropped twice - but the runs will give him some much-needed confidence in a relatively disappointing IPL.

Delhi may not tinker too much with their line-up, though Sehwag could make a comeback after missing two games. In the event of his inclusion, Mithun Manhas may be asked to sit out, which also means Daniel Vettori would have to miss out for Warner to play.

Loading gimp brushes

Some of my blog readers demanded me to post how to insatll or load the downloaded brushes into gimp heres the trick..

if you are having a zip file just extract it.okey
and heres the step..

After you've extracted the brushes from the zip file, you just need to move them to your GIMP brushes folder. For me, I'm running Windows Vista, and the folder I have to put them in is found at C:\Users\UserName\.gimp-2.6\brushes, but it may be different for you.

To find out exactly which folder you need to place your brushes in, start GIMP and go to Edit>Preferences. In the window that pops up, find "Folders" in the list on the left. Click the little "+" symbol next to it to expand this option, if it isn't already expanded. Then you should see "Brushes" listed below it. Click "Brushes" and then in the right side of the window you should see a list of the folder locations where GIMP will look for your brushes. You need to put your brushes in one of those folders for GIMP to be able to see them (actually you can put them in any folder you want, but then you have to tell GIMP where that folder is, so it knows where to look).

You will first need to download the skin named MediaPlayer from the skins page. This skin looks a lot like Windows Media Player 10.

To install on Windows:

Select the â€œVLC media player (skins)â€? option from the Start menu program group. This will start VLC in the right mode to select skins.

Right click on the title bar area, and choose Select skin \ Open skin and choose the skin file that you have downloaded.

Set Windows as Default OS when Dual Booting Ubuntu

To make this change, you'll first have to boot into Ubuntu, and then run the following command:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Find this section of the file:
## default num# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.## You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to 'saved' or your# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.default 0
The important line is the last one. You will need to change that number 0 to match the Windows boot section. Typically it's always going to be 4 on a default dual-boot configuration. Change this value to 4, and then save and reboot your machine. You should go into Windows instead of Ubuntu automatically.
Note: The blocks at the bottom of the file match the items in the menu. You can change this value to match whichever item you want as default, just remember that numbering starts at 0.

Reinstall Ubuntu Grub Bootloader After Windows Wipes it Out

Here's the quick and easy way to re-enable Grub.
1) Boot off the LiveCD
2) Open a Terminal and type in the following commands, noting that the first command will put you into the grub "prompt", and the next 3 commands will be executed there. Also note that hd0,0 implies the first hard drive and the first partition on that drive, which is where you probably installed grub to during installation. If not, then adjust accordingly.
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
> exit
Reboot (removing the livecd), and your boot menu should be back.

read below if Windows is now missing from the boot menu

If you installed Ubuntu before you installed Windows, then Ubuntu will not have anything in the grub configuration for Windows. This is where you'll have to do a bit of manual editing to the grub boot menu file.
If you open the file /boot/grub/menu.lst with the following command:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
You'll see a sample section for Windows, which you'll want to uncomment and add to the boot menu list in whatever position you want it in. (uncomment by removing the #'s)

Note that you should also verify that hd0,0 is the correct location for Windows. If you had installed Windows on the 4th partition on the drive, then you should change it to (hd0,3)

Turn your Windows Mobile phone into an iPhone

The method revolves around a skin (see the video for a closer look) which you can download here (look for the res_ppc-custom.icons.zip link). From your download, you'll want to copy the following files to a folder on your Windows Mobile phone (you should to be connected to your computer via ActiveSync):

After you've copied the files onto your smartphone, you can give it a quick test by navigating to the folder you've copied them to with File Explorer and running the launcher.exe. Launcher should give you the iPhone-like home screen. However, you will notice by default that the buttons on the home screen won't all point to something you can use, since each button points to a program, and some of them won't match anything on your Windows Mobile device. Luckily, this just requires some tweaking that we'll get to below.

Now download Slide 2 Unlock, the app that will give you that clever iPhone lock screen. This one's an installable .cab file, so copy it to your Windows Mobile phone and install it. It should install itself in your Program Files directory.

Now back to customizing the programs in our iPhone launcher. You can edit the application that each button points to by editing the config.ini file that resides in the same directory as launcher.exe. Since you can't open it directly from your device, just copy it back to your desktop and open it in your favorite text editor. It should look something like this:

[Button Config]text=\Windows\tmail.execalendar=\Windows\calendar.exeetc...

In order to edit the programs that each button launches, just find the button in the config.ini file and edit the path to the to-be-launched application. For example, I don't need to tap the Clock button to see my clock settings. Instead, I've mapped clock to run Slide2Unlock, which has a big, beautiful clock. To accomplish this, the new line in the config file looks like this:

If you wanted to take things even further, you can customize the images in the GFX folder that you copied to the same directory as launcher.exe. Inside are all of the small BMP graphics that make up your interface. Just copy your own buttons into the GFX\Icons folder with the same name as the button you want it to replace (the names are hard-coded, so you have to keep with the same naming scheme). To change the actual text, you'd need to edit the images in GFX\Res (it does get a bit tedious if you take the customization to this level).

That's really all there is to it. Once you've customized one button, you should get the idea of how you could customize any of the buttons (both visually and behaviorally). That said, here are my recommendations:

Leave SMS, Calendar, Photos, Camera, Calculator, and Notes as-is. These all pretty much link where most of us would want them to out of the box.
Map the Maps button to either Google Maps Mobile or Windows Live Search. (According to Gizmodo, Windows Live Search is better—at least on Windows Mobile devices.)
Map the Clock button to launch Slide2Lock (as described above).
This is certainly personal preference, but I prefer the Settings button to launch the Wireless Communication manager tool. If you use your regular Settings tools more than I do, you might want to keep this the same.
I remapped Phone to open up the flick-to-scroll contacts app, iContact. (You can always just hit the Call key to get to your phone dialing skin.)
Map web to whatever browser you prefer, from the built-in IE to Minimo or Opera (Safari may be in Windows, but don't look for it any time soon in Windows Mobile).
Point your iPod key toward your favorite media player; for example, if you downloaded it once-upon-a-time, the pPod/iPod skin for Windows Mobile.

Resetting the BIOS Password using Hardware

If you cannot access the machine after if has been powered up, it is still possible to get past the BIOS password. The BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory that is maintained while the PC is powered off by a small battery, which is attached to the motherboard. If you remove this battery, all CMOS information (including the BIOS password) will be lost. You will need to re-enter the correct CMOS setup information to use the machine. The machines owner or user will most likely be alarmed when it is discovered that the BIOS password has been deleted.

On some motherboards, the battery is soldered to the motherboard, making it difficult to remove. If this is the case, you have another alternative. Somewhere on the motherboard you should find a jumper that will clear the BIOS password. If you have the motherboard documentation, you will know where that jumper is. If not, the jumper may be labeled on the motherboard. If you are not fortunate enough for either of these to be the case, you may be able to guess which jumper is the correct jumper. This jumper is usually standing alone near the battery. If you cannot locate this jumper, you might short both of the points where the battery connects to the motherboard.

If all else fails, you may have to clear the BIOS password by resetting the RTC (Real Time Clock) IC (Integrated Circuit) on your motherboard.

Many RTC's require an external battery. If your RTC is one of this type, you can clear the BIOS password just by unsocketing the RTC and reseating it.

Most RTC chips with integrated batteries can be reset to clear the BIOS password by shorting two pins together for a few seconds.

You should be able to discover how to reset the BIOS password stored in most RTC (Real Time Clock) chips by reading the manufacturers data sheet for that RTC. Some RTC's, like the Dallas DS1287 and TI benchmarq bq3287mt cannot be cleared. The solution to resetting the BIOS password on systems with those RTC's is to purchase a replacement RTC chip. How inconvenient!

2. Go to View tab and select the option “Show hidden files and folder“

The hidden files and folders are displayed by this method normally. But in case some virus or script is preventing the hidden files and folders from being visible, follow the below steps:

- there select User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> System –> and there you will double click on “Turn Off Autoplay”

- in the window there you should select “Enabled” and select “All drives” . Now you can close the Group Policy.

8. Next click on Start –> Run and type “msconfig” and press “Enter”.
- you will open “System Configuration Utility”.
- click on “Startup” tap
- find the file MS32DLL, choose Enable All, then unhake “MS32DLL”
- click Apply then OK to close

- then exit the “System Configuration Utility” and select “Exit Without Restart” when prompt.

9. After this you double click on My Computer and select “Tools” and “Folder Options” and “View” tap to change back there.
- select “Hide Extention…” and “Hide protected operating system file” and “Don’t show hidden files and folders”.

- Then empty the “Recycle bin” and “Restart” your computer.

By default, NTFS creates an 8.3 filename every time it creates a long filename, which adds a bit of time to the file creation process. To speed things up, you can disable short filenames using the fsutil command:

fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1

Restart your machine for this to take effect. A couple of caveats:

You'll typically notice a performance difference only on drives that have a very large number of files (300,000 or more) but relatively few folders, and where a lot of your files have names that start similarly (for instance, NTFS Performance Hacks version 1.doc, NTFS Performance Hacks version 2.doc, and so on). That's because if you have a lot of files that start with the same characters in their filenames and occupy the same folder, NTFS has to work harder (and take more time) to generate unique 8.3 names for these files.
If you have an older version of Microsoft Office or some older third-party apps, they may not work properly if 8.3 names are disabled. So test first before you mass-implement this hack.

2. Name Your Files Appropriately

Let's say you can't disable 8.3 filenames because of older software on your machine. You can still improve NTFS performance by choosing a naming scheme for your files so that files located in the same folder differ at the start of their names instead of at the end. So for example, instead of

NTFS Performance Hacks version 1.doc
NTFS Performance Hacks version 2.doc

and so on, you might name your files

1 NTFS Performance Hacks.doc
2 NTFS Performance Hacks.doc

and so on.

That way NTFS won't have to work so hard to generate a unique 8.3 name for each file in the folder.

Microsoft has released a very simple procedure to follow.

1. Boot your system in to Windows XP.
2. Ensure you have the Vista DVD
image emulated or in the DVD drive.
3. Go to Start>>Run. Type e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force
4. You will notice the boot selection menu of vista now gone.
5. Format the partition/drive where you had Vista .
6. Remove two files Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK on your XP drives root folder (C:).
7. Restart to make sure that it works.
8. Merge the partitions together if you want.
